The Choral Group started life in 1972 as an evening class led by Alistair Barr, then teacher of music at Crieff High School. When he left to teach music in the West Highlands, Charlie Wilson, one of two very musical brothers in the town, took it on (his brother sang in the choir) and conducted the growing group for several years. Joan Taylor became the third conductor and for twenty years the choir flourished and grew under her leadership. When she eventually moved on, Peter Rutterford took up the reins, and under his guidance the group continues to enjoy and perform choral music of all kinds.
Peter was born in Cambridgeshire and joined the Royal Marines Band Service in 1964. On his commission in 1986, Peter continued his musical studies gaining advanced professional qualifications and degrees in music, and at the same time having been promoted to Major, completed his service with the Royal Marines as Director of Music to the Staff Band in Plymouth until his retirement in 1999. He then became the Director of Music for the Sultan of Oman’s Royal Navy for the next 2 years.
During his career, Peter has been the Musical Director of a number of choral groups and music societies. This is his thirteenth year as the Conductor of Crieff Choral Group. Peter is also the Musical Director for Perth Choral Society and has recently assumed the important post of Chairman of Perth Festival of the Arts.
